Running the concession stands at Gladwin athletic events is the major money maker of the Gladwin Athletic Association.  Football, basketball, volleyball, and soccer, and track and field fans are all able to buy food and beverages while watching their favorite Flying G team.  In addition, the concession stand is so effective and efficient, that clubs and organizations using the high school facility, frequently ask the GAA to supply concessions for their events as well.

For many, many years, the concession stands have run very smoothly.  Items are purchased at the lowest possible prices in the area, and then prepared on site. Each year, our concession stands have passed State inspections for food processing.

Parents of athletes, and friends of the athletic program, work the concession stands with friendly smiles and easy conversation.   At each contest, workers take on different tasks, to create an efficient means of delivering food and beverage to our fans.   We take pride in the fact that persons don't have to spend long times waiting in line.  They get served quickly.

Managing the entire process is Terry Brokoff.  His dedication, loyalty, support for our program, and the massive number of hours spent are priceless.  Completely voluntary, Terry spends enough volunteer hour to equal a second full-time job.  His experience and expertise, his searching for bargains, his precise bookkeeping, and the efforts of all of the workers has allowed the GAA to make approximately $30,000 each year just from the game concessions.  Every penny goes to support and to improve the Gladwin Athletic program.

Gladwin is well known in the wrestling community for their great breakfasts. Sometimes their fantastic breakfast workers have served several hundred wrestlers and their family members before 10 am.   Serving sausage gravy and biscuits, pancakes, and the egg and sausage plate, the GAA makes sure that no one goes hungry.

The typical fare is available at the concession stand.  Hot drinks are popular during football season and early spring, and frozen ices, pop, water, and popcorn are most popular during basketball season.  Hot dogs and Polish dogs disappear about as fast as they are cooked.  In addition to the expected treats, are nachos and cheese, hot pretzels,  dill pickles, and power drinks.  One surprisingly popular item is the frozen pickle juice.

Help in the Concession Stand

The concession stand is usually manned by the parents of a specific athletic team. For an example, varsity football parents may be asked to work during a freshmen or JV football contest. Parents are never asked to work at a time when they would miss their child's team playing.

Other people volunteer to work the stand, just for their willingness to help and to be around the athletic climate.

Regardless, there is always a need for people to help in one of the concession stands.  Whether you are one who loves to interact with people, one who prefers to make change, or one who likes to work alone, there is a job for anyone willing.  Some come early to set up and pop popcorn.  Some are needed for clean up after the event. Some work to keep the hot things hot.  Some sell to the customers.  Some like to do it all.
