Things Related Athletic Experience: Was helped by GHS Athletics By: Being an athlete at GHS helped me
to become a team player. Life is to always about you as an individual.
When keeping the interest of everyone around us, we, in the long run,
help others achieve things they may have never done on their own. I
love to see people excel in life. Especially in my basketball years, my
coaches made it very clear that we all had a role and that if we all
played our role we can WIN. Keeping in Shape: Not really.
Fortunately, I have good genes and am not too much over weight/out
of shape.
Other information: I had a chance for a couple years to coach some at
the time 13 year old kids in AAU/YBOA leagues. It was then where I
had a chance to teach the very things Coach Chilman and Coach Lier
taught me. Not only was I able to teach about the game of basketball
but also life lessons as well. it was one of the most fulfilling things I
have done. Those guys were like sponges soaking up everything that
was given. Some of them went on to play at Ohio State (BOO!!), Florida
State -- What a feeling to know that I played some part in their skill set.

“Are there things that relate to your athletic experience” and “Tell how Gladwin athletics may have helped you”. I will answer them together…
The influence that Gladwin High School (GHS) athletics had on my growth and development was significant. The core values, teamwork, and discipline often associated with participation in GHS athletics was a lasting foundation. Athletics, especially basketball helped me understand loyalty, sacrifice, and hard work.
GHS Coaching Staff helped me build confidence, taught me how to fail and recover, and pushed my competitive spirit. Knowing how to recover from failure, knowing how to win gracefully, knowing how to be a team player are a few of the many lessons that I still use today. Everything taught and learned from GHS athletics transitioned well to my 11 year career in the US Air Force. I was not afraid to raise my hand when asked to lead. After Uncle Sam, I still use many of those skills today as a hospital laboratory supervisor.
Thank-you GHS Coach’s for giving me the values needed to be successful in life.
8th Grade and JV Coach – Kevin Hetherington
9th Grade Coach – Art Adamec
Varsity Coach – Bill Chilman
I am proud to say I was once a member of GHS athletics.
Are you keeping in shape? While in the military, sure, keeping in shape was part of the job. I was always playing base sports, much like college intramural sports; basketball, softball, broom ball (awesome!), and volleyball. Staying fit was never in question. Now, I hate to say it, but no. I am waiting for that motivation factor to kick in.....right!
Other information:
I still think about all my fellow teammates from time to time. Might be out of contact with them, but memories are never forgotten. My Facebook site has pictures and other information, check it out. God Bless.....
